"There has always been a loom in my life. I remember my grandmother weaving and my mother carding and spinning wool. I enjoy doing things from start to finish. Hard work never daunted me."
Christina Benoit is well versed in the needle arts –from rug hooking to knitting to embroidery and painting with silk. But she always returns to the loom. Hand weaving is very demanding: threading a loom, checking the tension of the warp and weft; hours are required to make even simple woven textiles. Skill and decades of experience allows Benoit to weave tartans and four colour tweeds and even match china patterns for custom orders. She creates a variety of pattern and textures in cotton, wool and acrylic and carefully washes them so that they preshrink and hold their shape. Benoit's products include placemats and runners, tops, ponchos, scarves and stoles and baby blankets. Natural tones and black –notoriously difficult to weave– and white are always popular colour options. But Benoit is a fashion observer and she regularly has a variety of colours on her loom too. She gets inspiration from her garden and nature and adds that some of her best colour combinations have come from customer's suggestions.
